Talk:Installation Guide
From X-Wrt
Yesterday I fried (or "bricked") my Linksys WRT54GS 1.1 beyond repair. I followed all the instructions and still can't see what I did wrong. Looking back I see two topics which I'd like to see covered in the Wiki.
1. When uploading the image via the Linksys web interface I received an "upgrade are failed" (accurate quote!) message. According to what I found on the net, this error only occurs if someone tried to install the wrong firmware (one that is not designed for that particular version of router). Like I said, I have (had) a WRT54GS 1.1 though and used openwrt-wrt54gs-squashfs.bin (just as advised). For me this raises the question if there are different versions 1.1 of this router (US version, European version, etc.) or if the image can be truely applied to any WRT54GS that has a "1.1" on the bottom. The instructions also advise people to be extremely cautious with the upgrade, and to do anything possible just to make sure there's no interruption. This advice may be counter-productive though when the upgrade fails on its own: in my case I thought I was doomed when the error ocurred, and thought I was safe after I noticed that, despite the error, my Internet connection still worked. With hindsight, it's probably what I did AFTER this point that got me into trouble (whatever that was).
2. From what I make of the information I gathered AFTER it was too late, only a moron would start a delicate upgrade procedure like this one with boot_wait turned OFF (not my own words, but what I read on the Net). The x-wrt instructions only mention boot_wait as something to enable AFTER the upgrade. In my mind it would be essential and life-saving to mention boot_wait in the very first chapter and post instructions on how it can be enabled (and I am assuming that's possible).
I do hope my comments are perceived as constructive and will spare someone else a night of misery. --Yosmc 09:49, 23 April 2008 (CDT)
